Finding a unique and fun idea for a Wedding Shower or Bachelorette party is never easy. Sarah of Blossom and Branch thought of a sweet way to incorporate Bodega Flowers, something you always see on your way home from the office, into a class to cater to us city dwellers. Since Courtney has been guest blogging with us for the week we thought we’d invite her as well as other friends to a class and make it all cute for ya’ll.

From Sarah:

Bodega Flowers: 101″ was dreamed up with the idea that New York City women often feel they are too busy to bring the simple beauty of fresh flowers into their lives. And the savvy consumer is also conscious of the expense of floral arrangements. Meanwhile, We all pass those local groceries with mounds of inexpensive flowers on the way to bus or train. I thought, why not show people how to gather some bunches from the local bodega and create something charming in their home? This class teaches women how to shop for, clean/prepare and arrange flowers, using their own container.

For Courtney and our friends, I selected some basic bunches of roses, tulips and carnations from the local bodega and showed the ladies how to take them from generic to chic.

What’s a party without making it look all cute. Jillian gathered some local talents to help spruce up my apartment for the class. We rolled out craft paper, Love*Jenna used her talents to create personalized workstations, Jillian handmade aprons by using Ikea dish towels and Linda & Harriet donated their zig zag printed note pads for the occasion.

To spice up the party treats and spirits must be present. I enlisted Sasha Smith of Spin the Bottle NY to provide a wine education and tasting for the ladies. Leah my incredible partner in crime and second mom created scrumptious finger sandwiches. And, a Brooklyn party isn’t quite complete without the help of One Girl Cookies decadent sweets which paired nicely with what Sasha was pouring. All the ladies could take some sweets home with those cute craft bags by Nice Package.

I gave all the ladies a little instruction and look at em’ go…then Viola! Perfection.

Certainly you’re all familiar with the superduper talented Mimi of Mika78. And clearly we’re all going to want to be a little MORE familiar with her after this post is over. Because if you’re more familiar, as in like friends with her, she puts together an amazing bridal shower for you, complete with a little box of handmade goodies for your guests.

Look out Mimi, you’re about to get like 4,000 friend requests on facebook.

100lc_diymika-78paperfinger1

Mimi created this whole suite for one of her closest friends Christina’s bridal shower. Christina is, in Mimi’s words, and unbelievable woman and friend and Mimi wanted to create something really, really special to celebrate her bridal status. She and the rest of the bridesmaids planned an afternoon tea party at a cute restaurant in the West Village, which turned out to be exceptional inspiration for the invitation.

100lc_diymika-78paperfinger6

Because Mimi is so incredibly talented, thoughtful, and design-obsessed she scoured the city’s vintage flea markets for weeks looking for the perfect tea cups and napkins to incorporate into her design. Sigh. Does it get much more heartfelt? (Not to mention absurdly cute).

100lc_diymika-78paperfinger2

She worked with our now friend and DIY contest winner Bryn of Paperfinger (we didn’t know her when she won the contest, we swear), for the pretty calligraphy. Bryn wrote a bunch of different messages, including a quote Christina is using in her invitations, on the vintage tea cups using gold pen. And Mimi also included tea bags with little handmade tea tags in each guest gift.

100lc_diymika-78paperfinger5

AND Mimi made little fill-in-the-blank notes for guests to give to Chris at the shower. Everyone read theirs aloud at the shower and it turned out to be an excellent way to not only get to know Chris’s friends and family a little better, but also to allowed each woman to reflect on her own friendship with the bride-to-be. At the end Mimi collected each note and put them into a scrapbook for Chris. Such a cute idea!

100lc_diymika-78paperfinger41

The finished invite was literally a box full of goodies, tied up in baker’s twine and sent off to guests. If that doesn’t get you pumped for a bridal shower, we can’t imagine what would.

Guess what else? Because Mimi is genuinely the talented and thoughtful person that we already said she is, she’s made downloadable fill-in-the-blank cards for you all to print for an upcoming shower or party you’re hosting yourself.

There are 4 color variations included in the zip file. Even if you’re not hosting a shower in the near future, we highly recommend stashing these away for a time when they’ll come in handy. They really are too cute to pass up.

Thank you so much Mimi! Amazing work as always.

Ooh and you can keep up with everything Mimi does on her blog, SevenEight. Actually, there’s a little peek of Chris + Jay’s programs up there right now.

Remember the cute gocco’d invites Kristina made for Melanie’s rustic barn wedding bridal shower? Party, people! Photos have finally been sorted and they are ready for your viewing pleasures.

For the wine tasting portion of the party, Kristina stopped into Bottle Rock in Culver City and had the wine buyer put together a summery set of relatively inexpensive but delicious wines. Which is an awesome tip for anyone hosting a wine party, because seriously, unless you are like REALLY into wine how could you ever put one of these together on your own?

She also made little cards listing the each wine in order of the tasting with space for people to write notes about ones they particularly liked. Which most people lost interest in after about the 3rd sip but they were a cute detail… appreciated soley by those obsessed with wedding/party planning of course.

Flowers came from the farmer’s market and trader joes. For appetizers they had a yummy cheese platter, olives & almonds, and crudite with beet dip. Dinner was a simple squash gratin, green salad, and olive bread.

And then dessert. Possibly the best part of the night. Red Velvet cupcakes, “The Winning-Hearts-and-Minds Cake” from Orangette, and strawberry-rhubarb pie. The best part is both the cupcakes and the cake were made 2 weeks in advance and frozen, which is an excellent idea for anyone thinking about a homemade dessert bar.

Vintage tablecloths from Ebay and Kristina’s grandma’s collection

Napkins: $0.49 Ikea tea towels

Tea light holders: recycled yogurt jars

Wine: Bottle Rock

Musical entertainment: amazing compilations from Michael Antonia of The Flashdance. Srsly, this guy is like REALLY talented. Thank you Michael!

DIY-ish because it does seem a teeny bit unfair to call something DIY when the DIY-er is a designer by trade. But these were made at home, with the help of a Gocco, Paper Source, Ebay, and a few other widely accessible suppliers so they are technically possible for someone with a crafty set of hands.

Kristina made these for a shower she’s hosting in her backyard next month. She and Melanie have a running joke that they both want to plan rustic barn weddings (BAD)… which is fine, until you realize that 1) Kristina is already married and 2) Melanie is having a black tie Monte Carlo inspired seaside affair in Del Mar this September. Then it starts to become a little weird… especially when you know how often they refer to said fantasy wedding. To (hopefully) give them some closure on this topic, Kristina is throwing a secret rustic barn wedding artfully disguised as Melanie’s bridal shower. Or something like that. Don’t worry, Melanie is totally on board.

And like every good rustic barn wedding/bridal shower, you need super cute invites to get people in the mood, (Melanie - if you’re looking, don’t read the insert card or you’ll spoil your surprise):

All paper came from Paper Source, envelope liners were cut from vintage wallpaper purchased on ebay, lacey notecards were made using a Martha Stewart craft punch from Michaels, and the stamps are from a local stamp store.

We’re going to post more on the shower as it gets closer and of course we’ll show the party in action at the end of June.

A few weekends ago, Jillian and Amanda spent the weekend in Palm Springs for Jenna’s super fun bachelorette “party.” They rented a swanky mid-century modern house and spent the weekend lazing by the pool with many a lemon drop martini in hand. While the lifesaver-candy-veil-wearing night on the town is a decent bachelorette option, soaking up the sun with your best gals is a fabulous and highly recommended alternative.

ps2

And if you’re interested in doing something similar, know that adorable mid century homes are totally affordable weekend rentals. (See vrbo.com and craigslist to get started).

coasters

Cute coasters Jenna made for everyone… definitely a bonus of being friends with a creative people!

panties

And the undies. OMG we almost died when we saw the undies.

charlene1-31

The back story is that when asked what kind of underwear she liked for her shower, (sorry Jenna but it’s part of the story!), Jenna said she really only likes plain comfy cottons. Which is not a very fun pre-wedding pressie.

charlene2

So Charlene had the brilliant idea of turning Hanes Her Way into something a lot more fun. And then, after a little prodding from many excited girls, she launched her etsy shop, Paisley Pickle.

You can order custom panty designs for the bride (or yourself) in her shop.

AND, geez we almost forgot… Remember Jenna’s amazing dress design and wedding inspiration? Well, (sad for us, but awesome for Jenna), her wedding was picked up by Martha! Which means no more showing the amazing details until her wedding is published in the magazine, but in the mean time you can follow the last 2 weeks of planning over on the Bride’s Guide.
