Indie garden theme wedding: Kelly + Drew

November 8, 2011

Kelly + Drew have that wedding that you look at once, twice, a third time before you go to bed, and think, “I want that wedding!”. It’s a garden theme done indie style, and looks incredibly fun. If the point of a wedding was to have top-notch photos to look back on, than W.Scott Chester delivered. But then again, so did Amy Osaba, with her impressive ombre flower arrangements and colorful event design. And…so did Kelly + Drew for staying focused on the things they felt were most important, and then budgeting around that versus what they were told they needed. Like we said, we want this wedding (and Kelly’s dress)!

We wanted  an indie, garden theme with a vintage feel and really loved the idea of gradients. Ombre and gradients are really beautiful and while sticking our heads together with Amy Osaba, the idea got pushed into fruition. We took the idea of gradated table linens and then used that to pick out the bridesmaids dresses. Then I used the bridesmaid fabric swatches to bring to the bakery for a gradient cake inside and it continued from there.

Kelly entered to the instrumental version of “This will be our Year” by The Zombies (this is their favorite song from their favorite band, so it quickly became the theme for the wedding).

I would say a major key to the theme was picking the right vendors. We love the whole feeling of these new types of hand-crafted weddings and wanted vendors that loved it as much as we do. Cristen of W. Scott Chester pointed us to Amy Osaba and both of them recommended Sun in my Belly. We suddenly knew we had an awesome trifecta of talent that had similar tastes and enjoyed working together. We gave them a general direction and said, “Do what you do best!”. I think micromanaging vendors can sometimes be to a persons detriment. When creative people are free to be creative, their best work usually comes out, and I’d say this applied for our wedding and we couldn’t have been happier!

The photography was the beginning link in a chain we were creating and we wanted the whole wedding to start from a certain idea and feel. Then we focused on the venue, followed by the design / flowers and food. We spent most of the money on things to make the wedding feel intimate and personalized, which I really think affected the moods of everyone at the wedding too. Make the rest yourself or get friends and family to help out if their willing. Those small things you make and add in may only get noticed subconsciously, but after getting married I think every ounce of love and time we put into the wedding, we got back from our guests ten fold.

Congrats & thanks so much for sharing, Kelly + Drew!
