What’s better than colorful, creative details in a wedding? For us, it’s when they’re sprinkled throughout a special venue like a backyard or natural setting, like in this vibrant vignette coming to us from Sarina of Red Anchor Photo + Gabby of ‘Cause We Can Events. They gave us a few pointers on throwing the ultimate colorful backyard wedding too. Get out your notepads, spring brides…
1. Use your backyard’s natural beauty. Gabby says, We were fortunate enough to have beautiful green tropical trees as well as the pinkish-purple vibes of the bougainvillea to add even more color to our set up. Sometimes a nice simple white wall can make your whole event pop too. (See below!)
2. Opt for daring bridal accessories. How fun are these Zara shoes? A major perk of having a more relaxed venue is that adding fun pops of color doesn’t feel disconnected from the rest of the space.
3. Take the quintessential garden party color palette up a notch. The team went with bright pink, yellow, and oranges to challenge the brush and pastel tones everyone is used to seeing. By intensifying typical spring colors, everything popped against the greenery and white:
(Insane, right? So in love with this shot!)
4. Mix ‘n match. Don’t be afraid to mix it up. When you’re all about color, there’s no set number of shades you need to stick to. This goes for the type of flowers you use (or, paper flowers!) and décor too. You’d be surprised at how well everything seems to coordinate once all is said and done.
5. Create contrast with accent colors. The softer tones that made up the bridal beauty look helped balance out all those bold florals… Mlle Maud worked directly with the bride to custom-create a 100% organic cotton dress, using vintage French lace and inspired by shapes of everyday flowers. All makeup and hair products were either plant-based or chemical free. Kim of Nicol Artistry Makeup & Hair created the perfect look using soft tones on the eyes with a bright lip and boho hairstyle.
6. Think drinks. Gabby says, We love the idea of adding some color in the drinks to brighten up an event! We chose to make the signature cocktail one that we knew was full of flavor and color. Want to make it pop even more? Add fruit garnishes on the drinks as they are served as well as whole lemons, limes and strawberries on your bar cart to create that bright summertime look.
BTW, with a backyard wedding, it makes total sense to add a bit of local flair. Flower Duet gets most of their flowers in neighboring areas. As you may have noticed above, they reused some of them as a playful bridal accessory for the reception so that she didn’t feel the need to buy a second dress.
7. Carry the theme through to your signage too. It’s easy to think of color when it comes to floral arrangements, but weaving threads of your color story throughout the paper goods and signage makes a huge difference too. The place cards and cute little bar sign are from Typecast Lettering.
8. Incorporate eclectic vintage details. The team got all their big pieces from Thrifted Sister Vintage, who sources and repurposes vintage furniture, hand painted plates from MEKU Designs, and the green and amber glassware from Dish Wish. Incorporating one of a kind pieces forces you to think outside the box with your designs.
9. Go for nature inspired desserts. Since it’s a backyard wedding you’re having, you don’t want details to seem out of place, but you do want to elevate them. Floral cake by Beverly’s Bakery, FTW.
10. Lastly, have F-U-N. Did you see that one coming? If you’re choosing a colorful theme, you’re choosing to go bright, bold, and full of energy. By creating something that’s totally out of the ordinary, you’re letting your personalities shine through, so don’t be afraid to ditch convention and have a good time! See how they incorporated all of the above in our gallery:
