Ok, so continuing on with our trip…after our time exploring Venice and stopping for some delicious pizza in Verona, we jumped in our rental car and headed to the magical area of Lake Como. May I say that driving in Italy is an adventure, to say the least. Going nearly 90 mph on the autostrada and watching cars fly by us made me shriek a few times!
Nestled in the Alps, with a glacier lake that is as deep in parts as the mountains are high, it was a breathtaking sight! After driving a few hours from Verona, we looked up and saw this hotel thinking “Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could stay THERE?” only to find out that was in fact our hotel! We checked in to the lovely Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and hiked up on their property for this beautiful view of the hotel and lake below..
Breakfast each day was a huge glamorous spread of freshly prepared omelets, sausages, salamis, potatoes, an array of juices, fruit and breads on a big open-air patio overlooking the shimmering lake. The back pool area was one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen..surrounded by lush greenery with the cutest little snack bar. Their second pool is below.. and is actually on top of the lake! Such a perfect hotel for honeymooners.
Being in Lake Como makes you feel like royalty. Considering we weren’t, we felt a bit out-of-place until we decided to pretend like we belonged there in this fantasy land, amongst the wealthy vacationers and celebrities. We took ferries to Villa Balbianello, Villa d’Este, and Bellagio, ate fresh fish from the lake at Trattoria San Giacomo, drank champagne and reveled in the fact that we were actually present in this unbelievable scenery right out of a movie.
Our last day there, we decided to take a boat out on the lake to take in the scenery on the coast at sunset. It had been awhile since Tim had driven a boat, but we sped on out to the middle of the lake, laughing the whole while. Tim was snapping photos of me, I was taking photos of him and we were on a huge high. I felt so glamorous being out there on that boat, and almost teared up at how beautiful and serene it all was, and how lucky I felt to share this whole experience with my best friend. I heard the engine stop, turned around and Tim was there with a ring and the sweetest proposal!!!
Tears in our eyes, I said YES!
