There’s got to be a movie written about these two somewhere floating around. We know how their story ends (with an slightly edgy but romantic Spanish wedding at The Villa San Juan Capistrano), but it began with Brittany playing a little hard to get. Derek was very pursuant on messaging her to let him take her out, but she played the cool card. The ‘I want to get to know you before we go on a date date’ card. They meet up for casual drinks, both couldn’t help themselves from thinking the other was the most gorgeous person they’d met, talked the night away, talked about marriage (a few weeks later), then he proposed six months after!
We’re both creative people. I’m a makeup artist and he is a musician/music supervisor, so we really wanted to be very hands on with the planning and knew that the invitations would set the tone for the entire wedding. I collaborated with custom print designer Dana Grogger to create a vintage-romantic style invite with a hint of modern edge. We had vintage lace sewn on to the top of our invites, lined with arrows, and a heart and arrow logo with B+D in the center for the front of the invite.
Brittany told us Derek was born with style and we can definitely see that!
For table numbers they wrapped tree trunks in twine and feathers and surrounded them with vintage beer bottles and old medicine jars stuffed with succulents.
The music! We had a good friend of ours, Sean Rosenthal, spinning vinyl (mainly soul). Our first dance was to “With a Girl Like You” by The Troggs, and then we broke into the Pulp Fiction dance that John Travolta and Uma Thurman do to Chuck Berry. I danced to “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen with my father. We also had the band play that we met through, The Growlers. They have a really cool psychedelic surf rock sound.
Congratulations to Brittany + Derek! And a very happy Friday to y’all!
