We’re sure you’re seeing the trend this week. Lots of pretty 1920s inspired weddings, shoots and DIY’s have come our way just in time for The Great Gatsby movie release. We couldn’t love it more! Adding to all the pretty is Dixie + Shawna’s wedding, captured by Mustard Seed Organic Photography. They wanted to focus on an era that seemed so charming and lovely – where women dressed in styles from billowing to Art Deco, men wore tweed and hats, and cars started with a crank. Dixie’s bridal bouquet recipe: cream lisianthis, white veronica, peach dahlias, dusty miller, succulents, cream spray roses, and peach stock.
Their music: Both walked down the aisle to True Love Will Find You in the End by Hey Marseilles, and their first dance song was Naked As We Came by Iron & Wine.
We chose The Gardens of Bammel Lane because it had a timeless, classic quality. The English Conservatory lent to our “vintage” theme and, in addition to the surrounding gardens, gazebo, fountain, etc., it gave an air of romance to the event. The central location was very convenient, so our guests didn’t have far to go from their hotels. We loved that this great little gem was tucked away in the bustling city of Houston. It was perfect!
Don’t you just love it when guests come dressed to impress?
From Dixie… We tried to include decor that evoked these things, without being too rustic, using the mindset of one throwing a party during that time period. We wanted things to be cozy and familiar, using handmade and repurposed items, but still have a celebratory feel for the special occasion. I described the look as “the Great Depression, but with less depression and more European flair”. We invited our guests and vendors to dress in the 20s/30s style, and the majority did, which really enhanced the vintage ambiance. We had our DJ play old and old-sounding music (Django Reinhardt, Bob Wills, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Asleep at the Wheel, etc.) throughout the ceremony and much of the reception. We served “fancy picnic” fare (a mix of casual and elegant, with creative sandwiches and sides), and a signature cocktail consisting of Laird’s Applejack. We kept the wedding cake simple, garnished with only a bit of greenery, and we served macarons, cake pops, and homemade cookies (great-grandmother’s recipe).
