Morning, Cakies! We’re kicking off this lovely mid-October week with the most creative, conceptual bridal fashion editorial that is not only super perfect for Halloween, it’s inspired by an amazing assortment of female icons past and present that stylist Natasha of Ornamental Hermit and Alice Xue Photography worked into 6 genius costumes. So if you’ve been on the hunt for female icon costumes that are totally unique, empowering, and incredibly surprising, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s begin with this modern interpretation of the Catholic bride, as inspired by The Virgin Mary, Met Ball fashion, and Bernini sculptures.
Wild North Flowers nailed their interpretation with the floral design. On the inspiration behind the shoot: With its chaotic marriage of high fashion and bridal, this shoot injects the concept of a “dream wedding” with its own cheeky, off-kilter twist. By taking a new spin on some old favorites, we invite brides to see what could be possible. Encapsulating archetypes evocative of famous fashion moments, these six looks walk the fine line between cartoonish exaggeration and unvarnished loveliness.
Next up, we’ve got the “Birds of Paradise” bride, inspired by characteristics of a few different female icons, from Iris Apfel to Jerry Hall to Anna Cleveland.
Feathery lashes, check.
And did we mention each concept came complete with its own interpretation of the wedding cake? As all bridal Halloween costumes should! Props to Cakes Cove on these genius cake designs.
Their Marie Antoinette bride came complete with a healthy dose of inspiration from Rihanna’s cover on CR Fashion Book.
Pretty enamored with Marie’s beauty look, actually. Jessica of Toronto Beauty Group was behind the costume makeup and Blake Arsenault created the wigs for each unique ensemble.
Every good costume roundup includes a little Twiggy, doesn’t it? The team’s interpretation of a New Wave bride included influences from Twiggy, Anna Karina, and Jane Birkin.
To fast forward a bit, we’ve got the Shotgun bride, pulling her look from everyone from Britney Spears to Lana del Rey to Courtney Stodden and even Barbie herself. Fishnets are a must!
From the nonchalant brattiness of a shot-gun wedding, to the verdant, unfussy charm of 60’s new wave, or a modern Marie Antoinette’s sybaritic playfulness, these looks distinguish themselves from your typical bridal look with their reliance on idiosyncratic touches, whether it is using a vintage polka-dotted raincoat as a wedding cape, 18th century underwear as outwear, or a healthy dash of early 2000s bad taste.
Their gothic bride was inspired by Siouxsie Sioux and other alt-rock icons.
