Megan and Jason’s amazing alpine lake elopement was a “Plan B” that turned out absolutely perfectly. These two had originally planned an epic honeymoon tour through Asia with a stop in Hawaii for their elopement, but after Coronavirus travel restrictions foiled their plans twice, they decided to change locations and still get married. Their new vision included big mountain views, and the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado delivered! See below for their epic elopement, as captured by Julie Haider…
Before the sun peeked over the mountains, Megan and Jason were getting ready for an elopement day full of adventures. The day started with a First Look reveal on the banks of a gorgeous glassy lake. With the whole area to themselves and a perfect reflection of the surrounding mountains in the lake, it was a peaceful and beautiful way to start the day.
Next, they hopped in a Jeep and made their way up into the mountains along 4×4 trails. They were both blown away by the emerald green alpine lake at the summit – the perfect place for their ceremony. In the early morning light they read their hand-written vows between laughter and tears. After finishing their ceremony and signing their self-marrying license, they celebrated with champagne at an elevation of 11,984 ft and then enjoyed exploring around the lake.
The drive back down the mountain was equally spectacular with incredible views and several small waterfalls and cascades. Their next stop was a quick hike into the forest to find a set of secret waterfalls. Braving the ice cold water, they waded to the base of the lower falls and took in the beauty of the crashing water. Moss-covered rock walls on either side created a special spot just for them. Megan led the way (she said hiking in a wedding dress was a breeze!) as they hiked a little farther into the forest to find the stunning upper falls. The vibrant teal colored water surrounded by rocks and forest felt magical – what an incredible experience for their elopement day!
Just BREATHTAKING!
After hiking back from the falls, Jason and Megan found a great picnic spot to end their day of adventures. With beautiful mountain views in every direction, they enjoyed charcuterie and snacks from a local shop. Storm clouds began to roll in with the sound of distant thunder and wind rustling the trees. They packed up their picnic just in time before it began to rain in the valley.
Although this wasn’t the elopement day they originally planned due to COVID-19, Megan and Jason both said that it was the best day and even better than they could have imagined! Congratulations you two!!
